You may find you enjoy temporarily working less. You can arrange this, for example, by using parental leave. In addition, we can imagine that it is quite a transition now that your role is both as an employee and parent. An hour longer sleep after a restless night can sometimes do wonders. Have you noticed a need for an increase/reduction of your working hours or flexible working hours? Discuss your wishes with your manager. We will be happy to look at the possibilities.

Now that you have been back at work for several weeks we are curious to see how you are doing. Are you managing both roles (of both parent and employee) combined? Are you satisfied with your current working hours and range of duties? And is there a healthy work-life balance?

Types of leave for partners

*Additional birth leave* Additional birth leave is extra leave for partners after the birth of a child, on top of the standard birth leave. In the Netherlands, the partner first has the right to 1 working week of birth leave (usually fully paid by the employer). After that, the partner can take additional birth leave of up to 5 working weeks. During these weeks, you generally receive a benefit from the UWV equal to 70% of your (daily) wage, and your employer cannot refuse the leave if you apply in time. On the website of the national government and the UWV you can find a lot more information about this in case you want to know more about the ins and outs.

Important to know:

➤ You must take the additional birth leave within 6 months after the birth.

➤ You can take it all at once or spread it out, as long as it’s within that period.

Parental leave With young children, you often have a lot to deal with. In our country, the law states that you are entitled to (unpaid) parental leave in order to combine the tasks of being a parent with your work. How you organise this is largely up to you and your employer. However, a few guidelines have been established for the right to parental leave. We list the most important ones so that you know what they are and can decide whether you would like to make use of them at some point. On the website of the national government and the UWV you can find a lot more information about this in case you want to know more about the ins and outs.

Important to know:

➤ You are entitled to 26 times your contracted hours per week of parental leave for each child under the age of 8. So if you work 40 hours, you are entitled to 1040 hours of parental leave in total.
